LeapTrack® Grade-Level Instruction FAQs

Top FAQ Entries for LeapTrack®

How do I know which box to check when I'm installing the software?

  1. Your blue boxes should have a white sticker on the bottom corner. On it, you will find the grade level kit.
  2. On the first page of the Installation Screen, check the box with only that grade number. There is no need to check any of the other boxes in the upcoming screens.

I installed the software, but my LeapPort™ light keeps flashing green.

  • The computer probably did not recognize the hardware device.
  • Go to My Computer and click on Control Panel. Select Add Hardware and follow the wizard instructions.
  • Your LeapPort™ lights will stop blinking once the Add Hardware is successful.

I put the cartridge in the LeapPort, but the cartridge is not showing up on the computer screen.

  • Exit the LeapTrack™ system.
  • Unplug the USB cable connected to the LeapPort™ station.
  • Plug the USB cable back into the LeapPort™ station.
  • Log back into the LeapTrack™ system, and you should be able to see the cartridge on the computer.

I gave my student an Assessment but I don't see a Report.

  • You only get a Report for the subject you assessed your student on (Reading, Language Arts, or Math).
  • If you administered an Early Literacy Diagnostic, you must access the Early Literacy Diagnostic Report to view results.
  • Practice books do not provide any reports. These are used to give students practice on test items.

My student has been working on the same skill card for the past 2 weeks.

  • Remember, if a student does not perform at the default set for skill card mastery (the default is set at 75% but can be adjusted), the card will remain on a student's Learning Path until it is mastered.
  • Be sure to review the Skill Cards Results report to see how the student is performing on that particular card. Student should complete side A and then Side B and spend an average of about 10 minutes on a skill card.

Learning Path

Why would a student's Learning Path contain very few skill cards and books?

If a student scored very well on an assessment, his or her Learning Path may contain very few skill cards and books. A score of 100% will not generate a Learning Path. To obtain a more lengthy learning path for this student, it is recommended that you administer the next assessment in the series.

Can I load skill cards for more than one subject area onto a cartridge at a time?

Yes, you may load student cartridges with skill cards from all subject areas simultaneously.

Can I load multiple subject Learning Paths at the same time?

Yes, you can load Learning Path content from different subject areas at the same time as long as you have administered an assessment for each subject area chosen. Simply select the subject areas to load, and the system will automatically select the first two cards from the student's learning Path in the first subject, then two cards from the next subject, and so on.

I think I may be missing some skill cards because the Learning Path is listing cards I don't have. What should I do?

Most likely the installer selected some content that is not part of your basic grade level classroom kit.

Version 3.0
If you are using LeapTrack Version 3.0, you should select only the grade level of your classroom kit during the installation process. To review your selections, go to the Tools menu and select Install Classroom Kits. The first screen that appears is for LeapTrack v3.0 classroom kits. Select only the grade level of your classroom kit. If you have no other LeapFrog SchoolHouse products in your classroom, continue through the following screens and make sure no other choices are selected. Click Finish.

Version 2.0
If you are using LeapTrack Version 2.0, your classroom kit will be one of the following configurations: K/1, 2/3, or 4/5. To review your installation, go to the Tools menu and select Install Classroom Kits. There should be no choices selected on the first screen. Hit Next to get to the second screen. Select the configuration appropriate for your grade level and click Next. If you have no other LeapFrog SchoolHouse products in your classroom, continue through the following screens and make sure no other choices are selected. Click Finish.

After completing these steps, return to the Reports tab and regenerate the Student Assessment Results report. (You cannot simply open the report previously generated as it will only show you what it displayed previously.) After generating the new report, review the Learning Path again. You should no longer see skill cards that are not contained in your classroom kit.

If the Learning Path still displays skill cards you do not have, please contact Technical Support for assistance. See the "Technical Support" section for more information.

I loaded a Learning Path on a cartridge, but not all the cards were loaded. Why not?

Cartridges can hold about 8mb of content at a time, which equates to roughly 4-8 skill cards depending on the size of each skill card's audio files. Therefore, only a portion of the entire Learning Path is loaded onto a single cartridge. Once students begin working on their learning paths, you should load learning paths on a weekly basis. The LeapTrack system will determine which cards to remove from the Learning Path based on the student's performance. (The default setting is 75% correct in order to remove a skill card from a Learning Path.) If there is room on the cartridge, it will also load the next series of skill cards in the Learning Path.

One of my students completed an assessment, but when I review the Student Assessment Results report there is no Learning Path listed. Why not?

If the student's percent correct on the assessment was 90% or greater, there would be no need for him or her to complete the skill cards prescribed when items on that assessment are answered incorrectly. To obtain a Learning Path for this student, it is recommended that the student take the next level assessment.

Do all assessments prescribe to a Learning Path for items answered incorrectly?

The only assessments that do not prescribe to a Learning Path based on incorrectly answered items are the Vocabulary Diagnostics and the State Practice Tests.

Recommended for both Windows and Macintosh systems: An Internet connection If the computer running the LeapTrack application has access to the Internet, the user can check periodically for product updates.

Is there a limit to the number of students that can be loaded into the LeapTrack system application software?

There is no finite limit to the number of records the LeapTrack system application can hold.

On the View Last Load page, what does the information contained in the Status column mean?

Three different descriptors may appear in the status column: Scored, Scored and Completed, or Unscored and Completed. The status column may also be blank. Specific details about each status are listed below for your reference:

Status Column is Blank: The assessment, skill card, or book was loaded onto the student's cartridge. No scoring has occurred, which indicates the student did not start the activity or the cartridge was not placed in the LeapPort after the activity was completed. The status column may also be blank if a student spent less than one minute on an assessment and scores less than 5% correct.

Status Column is Scored: The student completed the skill card or book and it was scored, but the student did not score high enough to remove the activity from the learning path. (The "mastery" setting defaults at 75%, and may be modified by the teacher.) Non-logging skill cards (see Skill Cards section for more information) will also show "Scored" if the student spent less than ten minutes on the skill card.

Status Column is Scored and Completed: The student completed the skill card or book and scored high enough to remove the activity from his or her learning path. Any assessments that have been scored will also display this status. Non-logging skill cards will display "Scored and Completed" if a student spent at least ten minutes on the skill card.

Status Column is Unscored and Completed: This status only appears if you are using an earlier version of the Macintosh application software, such as v1.5. This version of the software did not include scoring for skill cards or interactive decodable books, so if a student completed a skill card or book the status would show "Unscored and Completed". This is based on the skill card or book being activated by the student.

(Windows users only) I can only see part of the LeapTrack application screen. How can I see the entire LeapTrack application screen?

Your computer's display may be set to use "Large Fonts". To resolve the problem, use the Control Panel to switch from Large Fonts to Small Fonts. The control panels are accessible from the Settings choice on the Start menu. The font size setting is usually on the Settings tab--you may need to click the Advanced button to see it.

What is the Student ID field for? Can I use that to create numbers for each of my students?

The Student ID field is for the student's social security number or unique student identification number assigned by the school. This field should be used for only those two numbers. Arbitrarily assigning numbers to each student can create problems in the future when a teacher wants to assign the same number to another student or use that field for the unique student number or social security number.

May I install the LeapTrack system application software on more than one computer?

No, the LeapTrack system application software may be installed on only one computer. Installation of the software on more than one computer violates the copyright and licensing agreement, as noted in the information contained in the CD case and System Guide.

Assessments

What subject areas are addressed by the LeapTrack system assessments?

Each LeapTrack system classroom kit includes assessments in Reading, Math, Language Arts, and Vocabulary. Additional assessments in Early Literacy Diagnostics are also included in K-2 classroom kits.

I heard the LeapTrack system is aligned to state standards. Which states does the LeapTrack system provide reporting on?

The LeapTrack system assessments are aligned to and provide state standard reporting for all 49 states. The state of Iowa is the only exception because no state-specific standards have been published to-date.

If a student selects several answers for a single assessment question, which answer is recorded?

The last answer chosen is the one recorded. If a student wants to go back and change an answer to a question already completed, he or she can simply touch the question number and the desired answer.

If a student is taking an assessment and accidentally ends it before completing all the questions, what should I do to help the student complete the rest of the test?

The student can simply turn the LeapPad or Quantum Pad unit back on and continue answering questions where he or she left off.

How can I remove a test from a student's history, for instance, if he or she did something to invalidate a test?

In the current version of the LeapTrack system, there is no way to remove a testing session from a student's history. This option will be included in the next version of the LeapTrack system.

I recently administered a Vocabulary assessment and noticed that it did not prescribe a learning path. Why not?

The Vocabulary assessments are intended to provide teachers with specific information about a student's skills in Vocabulary. While the LeapTrack system does not include skill cards specifically for Vocabulary, students do receive some instruction and practice on these skills as they complete the Reading skill cards.

Why does my LeapTrack system kit include only one Vocabulary assessment per grade level?

The Vocabulary assessments are diagnostic assessments, which help teachers pinpoint particular needs in vocabulary skills. As indicated in the question above, these assessments are not core to the LeapTrack system prescriptions. However, the LeapTrack system classroom kits do include Vocabulary assessments at three different grade levels to address the needs of under- or over-performers.

When do the assessments prescribe to the Interactive Decodable Book series?

Items answered incorrectly on Reading assessments may prescribe to the Interactive Decodable Book series. When prescribed in the Learning Path, these books will appear at the very bottom under "Further Learning Activities", beneath the list of skill cards.

Are there state-specific assessments available?

Currently, state-specific assessments are available for Florida and Texas. These assessments provide practice opportunities for the state assessment test.

Will there be other state-specific assessments available in the future?

At this time, no plans are in place to develop other state-specific assessments.

Miscellaneous

How does the LeapTrack system meet the needs of mixed-ability classrooms?

Each LeapTrack system classroom kit includes content at the target grade level and one grade below and above to address the needs of under- and over-performing students.

I just took over the class mid-year and I don't have the password. The former teacher's password hint won't help! What do I do?

Check with your school administrator. If the school administrator doesn't have the password, contact LeapFrog SchoolHouse Technical Support. See the "Technical Support" section for more information.

It's the end of the school year and I want to retire my current classroom and start a new one. How do I do that?

See pages 88-89 in the System Guide called "Archiving and Reactivating Classes".

I cannot find particular skill cards I want to load. These cards are included in my classroom kit, but not on the software application. Why not?

You may need to modify your classroom kit installation to include your content. Please refer to pages 57-59 in the System Guide called "Modifying Your Installation" or contact Technical Support for assistance. See the "Technical Support" section for more information.

Skill Cards

How do I determine the grade-levels for the skill cards?

You can identify the grade level for a particular skill card by using the color code. Skill cards are assigned based on items missed on the LeapTrack system assessments, so a student may be prescribed skill cards from more than one grade level in his or her learning path.

Grade Skill Card Color
K	Red
1	Dark Blue/Purple
2	Yellow
3	Pink
4	Lime Green
5	Light Blue

Why aren't the skill cards labeled with the associated grade levels?

The grade levels are not noted on the skill cards so that students do not know if other students are working below grade level.

One of my students completed a skill card, but the Skill Card Results report indicates the student received a score of "0/0 - N/A". What does this mean?

When a score of "0/0 - N/A" appears on a Skill Card Results report, it means that the skill card does not currently track student responses. As a result, there is no information to display in the Skill Card Results report.

Why don't all skill cards track student responses?

The LeapTrack system skill cards were originally created to provide additional instruction and practice in critical skills, but no record of student results was created when a skill card was completed. As LeapFrog SchoolHouse began to receive feedback from educators, it became clear that it would be beneficial to track responses on skill cards in addition to assessments so that teachers could review skill card results, too. This additional report of results helps ensure that students master skills as they complete skill cards, and provides teachers with an option to have students complete the skill card again if the score was not adequate.

Most of the LeapTrack system skill cards now include a tracking mechanism that logs responses. However, there are still a small number of skill cards that do not include this added feature. Even though completion of these cards doesn't result in an informative Skill Card Results report, teachers can be confident in assigning these cards because they still provide value to students with instruction and practice in critical skills that were missed. Additionally, as new versions of the LeapTrack system are released, LeapFrog SchoolHouse will continue to implement the logging features and improved reporting on the skill cards.

One of my students completed a skill card, but the score shown on the Skill Card Results report doesn't seem to make sense. Why?

This is a known bug, which has been fixed. To verify you've received the update, or to receive an update via CD-ROM, please contact Technical Support for assistance. See the "Technical Support" section for more information.

LeapPort™ Cartridge Station/Cartridges

Can I load more than one skill card at a time onto a cartridge?

Yes, the LeapTrack system cartridges can hold content for multiple skill cards at the same time.

Can I load more than one interactive book or assessment at a time onto a cartridge?

No, the LeapTrack system cartridges can only hold content for one interactive book or assessment at a time.

Some cartridges take a very long time when I load content onto them, while others seem to load very quickly. Does this indicate a problem with the cartridge?

The amount of time it takes to load content onto a cartridge depends on the type of content, the amount of audio, and the number of cartridges in the LeapPort cartridge station. The time can be as short as 20 seconds for one inserted cartridge to as long as 30 minutes if 12 cartridges are inserted and loaded with large audio files at the same time.

I inserted a student's cartridge into the LeapPort cartridge station, but the student's name did not appear--instead "Unknown" appears. What's wrong?

The word "Unknown" is displayed when a cartridge has not yet been assigned to a student. It might be helpful to check the label to see if the cartridge has been assigned yet. If the cartridge has already been assigned, there may be a communication problem. Remove the cartridge. Wait a few seconds and then re-insert the cartridge into a different slot. On rare occasions, the cartridge data can become corrupt and you may have to reassign the cartridge. If this problem occurs with other cartridges, exit the LeapTrack application and restart it.

I inserted a cartridge and the words "Not in Class" appear where the student name should be. What does that mean?

The words "Not in Class" may appear for any cartridge that is assigned to a student that belongs in another class. Check to see that you opened the correct class on the main login screen. Close the class (use the LeapTrack pull-down menu at the top of your screen). Return to the main selection screen and open the correct class.

The cartridge is not showing up on the application interface (Select Students tab) when I insert it into the LeapPort cartridge station. Why not?

This can happen when at least one of the following conditions is true:

  • The LeapPort cartridge station was not connected when you started the LeapTrack application.
  • The LeapPort cartridge station driver was not installed properly.
  • The LeapPort cartridge station was disconnected and then re-connected while the LeapTrack application was running.
  • The cartridge is not a LeapTrack system cartridge. Cartridges with pre-loaded content that you purchased for other LeapFrog products will note work with the LeapTrack system.
  • Hibernation or sleep mode was triggered.
  • The cartridge may be defective.
To resolve this problem, close the LeapTrack application and then unplug and re-connect the LeapPort cartridge station. Restart the LeapTrack application. If the problem persists, contact Technical Support at 877-958-5435.

(Macintosh OS 10.1 users only) I removed a cartridge while it was being loaded and the following message appeared: "Connection has been broken with LeapPort". The removed cartridge still appears on-screen in the LeapTrack application, even though I removed it. What should I do now?

To reset your LeapPort cartridge station, follow these steps:

  1. Wait for other functioning cartridge ports to turn green.
  2. Unplug the USB cable from the LeapPort cartridge station.
  3. Exit the LeapTrack system application.
  4. Remove all cartridges from the LeapPort cartridge station.
  5. Reconnect the USB cable to the LeapPort cartridge station.
  6. Restart the LeapTrack application.
  7. Reinsert the cartridges into the LeapPort cartridge station.

My LeapPort cartridge station is connected to a USB hub. Sometimes my computer does not recognize the LeapPort cartridge station, or I cannot access the cartridges in the LeapPort cartridge station. How can I correct this?

Make sure you connect your LeapPort cartridge station using the following steps, in this order:

  1. Verify that you are using a powered USB hub. The LeapPort cartridge station will not work with a non-powered USB hub.
  2. Turn on and/or connect the power supply to the USB hub.
  3. Connect the USB hub to your computer.
  4. Connect the empty LeapPort cartridge station to the USB hub.
  5. Insert cartridges into the LeapPort cartridge station.
Your problem could also be the result of a voltage spike. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Remove all cartridges from the LeapPort cartridge station.
  2. Turn off the power to the USB hub.
  3. Turn on the power to the USB hub.
  4. Reinsert the cartridges into the LeapPort cartridge station.
In the future, to avoid voltage spikes, remove the cartridges from the LeapPort cartridge station before starting or restarting your computer or connecting the LeapPort cartridge station to the computer.

I accidentally added the same student into my classroom twice. How do I remove the second one?

Log in to the LeapTrack application and click the Edit Class tab. Select the duplicate student name and click Delete Student.

A student in my class transferred out and I want to reuse his cartridge--how do I erase it?

From the toolbar at the top of the screen, choose the Administration drop-down menu and select Erase Cartridge. Use the Assign Cartridge button on the Edit Class tab to reassign the cartridge to another student.

One of my students used someone else's cartridge by mistake to take an assessment. Now what do I do?

Reassign the assessment to both students and have them both redo their assessments.

After a student completed an assessment, I placed her cartridge into the LeapPort. A message appeared to tell me the student didn't answer all of the questions, but the student says she answered them. How can I be sure the assessment score is correct?

Note that each student must turn off the LeapPad unit before removing the cartridge. Otherwise, some questions will be marked as unanswered even if the student answered them. If the scores on an assessment seem incomplete, ask the student to retake the assessment, being careful to follow these instructions when completed. Rescore the assessment and use the new score.

When I try to download content to all twelve cartridges at once, an error message appears for a certain cartridge. If I load content onto that cartridge only, it works fine. What should I do?

If this happens repeatedly, contact Technical Support for assistance. There may be a problem with a specific cartridge or slot in the LeapPort.

When I try to load content to a specific cartridge, I receive an error message. What should I do?

Remove the cartridge from the LeapPort and reinsert it. If the error still appears, erase the cartridge completely and then reassign it to the same student. If the problem still occurs, contact Technical Support for assistance.

What should I do if my LeapPort consistently flashes green lights?

Contact Technical Support for assistance. See the "Technical Support" section for more information.

Printing

I don't have a printer connected to my computer. Can I use a remote printer to print reports?

Yes. The LeapTrack application uses standard Macintosh and Windows printing functions, so reports can be printed on any local or network printer that is accessible to your other applications. A printer is needed only if you want to print reports. Reports can be previewed on-screen within the LeapTrack application.

Can reports of student or class results be saved?

The LeapTrack system saves all student data. To review results for a particular student or class again, simply open the previously generated report or regenerate the report again. Additionally, reports can be saved in Adobe® Acrobat® format (PDF). PDF reports require the Acrobat Reader® program.

NOTE: To create PDF versions of reports, you must have a printer configured for the computer. PDF files can't be created without a valid, configured printer.

Reports

I was looking for a report I generated last week, but it no longer appears under the Previously Generated Reports. What happened?

The LeapTrack system application deletes each generated report five days after you last use them. To view a report again, simply regenerate it.

My student took one of the diagnostic assessments, but I am unable to generate a report. Why?

Make sure that you are generating the correct report for the assessment. Select the Student Early Literacy Diagnostics or Student Vocabulary Diagnostics report to review results of those assessments.

One of my students completed an assessment, but when I review the Student Assessment Results report there is no Learning Path. Why?

If the student's percent correct on the assessment is 90% or greater, there is no Learning Path. To obtain a Learning Path for this student, it is recommended that the student take the next level assessment.
